The most powerful teachings of my life were the one’s offered to me by my clients, the HIV infected, when I served as an emotional support volunteer at San Francisco and later Los Angeles Shanti Foundation(s) during the early days of the epidemic. So much, so quick, so incredibly, perhaps unbearably, heavy. But, there were priceless moments when an occasional calm in the storm would arrive and the dying, if they loved and trusted you enough, would reveal their stories. Later, when I first heard Gary Jules’ “Mad World”–I was stunned and brought to overwhelm.
